Exercise Referral


Exercise referral schemes continue to grow in number through GP commissioning, local authorities and the private sector. An extremely rewarding and potentially profitable way of advancing your career prospects, the Diploma in Exercise Referral will amply prepare you for working with medically referred clients.

Utilising your chosen discipline (eg, personal training, exercise to music or yoga) you will be equipped to work with clients with a wide range of common medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, depression, diabetes (Type 1 and 2), hypertension and obesity. You will also gain knowledge about the UK health care system and the exercise referral process.

Learn to…

  • Understand the basic pathology of a range of common medical conditions and how they affect exercise response. Common medical conditions include:
    • Hypertension, Hypercholesterolaemia
    • Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
    • Diabetes (Type 1 and 2), Obesity
    • Rheumatoid & Oesteo-arthritis
    • Osteoporosis
    • Depression, Stress, Anxiety
    • Non-specific back pain
    • Knee & Hip Replacements
  • Effectively apply appropriate exercise strategies according to the medical conditions
  • Understand the current health care system in the UK and the referral process, including referrals to other professionals
  • Apply the principles of healthy eating to a range of medical conditions
  • Effectively communicate with and support clients
  • Modify and deliver an effective exercise programme for clients

The course is completd via home study, there are two exams to pass and a practical assessment which will be conducted at our centre. Centre days generally take place on weekends to make it possible for all individuals who wish to undertake this course to do so whilst not interfering with a working life.

Cost - £420

All materials will be supplied by the centre.

Entry Requirements

At least 30 hours of teaching experience and one of the following:

  • Level 2 Gym or ETM (Level 3 Exercise Nutrition and Anatomy and Physiology will also need to be completed)
  • ​Level 3 Yoga or Pilates (Level 3 Exercise Nutrition will also need to be completed)
  • Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training

The learner must achieve all six mandatory units. The total credit value is 38
